How to Painting with Airless Sprayer in the Cold?

date

The chilly air causes the paint to get thicker and take forever to dry properly. In the coming of winter, some regions such as northern Europe, Russia, Canada, etc., painting with an airless sprayer in cold weather can be challenging. No matter how carefully you spray, you end up with uneven coats, drips, and brush marks as you try in vain to spread the thickened paint smoothly. Does this mean you need to put off all your exterior painting projects until spring? Follow these tips and tricks from AEROPRO.

The first step is choosing a paint formulated for cold weather use. Look for paints labeled for use in temperatures as low as 35-50°F. These paints contain resins and solvents that remain flexible even when temperatures drop, so the paint film won't get brittle and crack. Using the wrong paint will likely lead to poor adhesion, uneven coating, and other problems. Latex paints are generally fine down to about 50°F, but below that you'll want a specially formulated cold weather acrylic. Oil-based paints are also more cold weather tolerant than latex. Mix the paint beforehand and keep cans warm until use.

Proper surface preparation is crucial when painting in the cold. Surfaces should be clean, dry, and free of dirt, grease, mildew and other contaminants that could interfere with paint adhesion. Use a degreaser if needed. Previously painted surfaces may need light sanding to roughen them up and remove any gloss for maximum adherence. Use a heat lamps to warm the surface if needed before painting.

Setting up your airless sprayer properly can make a big difference. Use the shortest paint hose possible to minimize pressure loss. Choose a spray tip sized for the project - smaller tips atomize paint better for smoother results. Slow the pace of your arm when spraying; moving too fast can cause sputtering. Keep paint warm before spraying by storing cans and paint bucket indoors; cold thick paint can clog the sprayer.

When spraying, maintain a proper spraying technique. Keep the sprayer perpendicular to the surface and the correct distance away for even coverage.  Vertical strokes may cause drips. Keep a wet edge by spraying from one end to the other without breaking. Watch for dry overspray and avoid too thick a coat that could sag. Keep an eye on the paint as you work. If it starts to thicken due to the cold, you might need to thin it.

Take steps to keep the painted surface warm while drying. Tents or tarps can retain heat and speed drying. Position portable heaters nearby, but keep them far enough away to prevent fire hazards or blowing dust on wet paint. Avoid using direct high-heat that could dry the top layer too fast and lead to trapping moisture underneath.

Slow drying in cold temperatures can lead to problems like poor adhesion or lingering odors. Allow for extended recoat windows between coats. Follow AEROPRO’s recommendations, Allow for much longer drying times. Paint may take twice as long or longer to fully cure in colder temperatures. Don't rush to handle or recoating painted surfaces before the coat has fully cured. and test a small area before recoating large sections. For multi-day projects, it's best to wait for warmer temperatures before applying final coats.

Use a primer formulated for cold temperatures. Select low or zero VOC paints that emit less odor, and ventilate the area. Clean sprayer valves and tips thoroughly between uses to avoid residual paint drying and clogging.
