Airless paint sprayers are a great tool for DIYers and professionals alike. They allow you to paint large surfaces quickly and efficiently with coat. A little effort goes a long way when it comes to maximizing the longevity of airless painting sprayer. With some simple maintenance steps and proper usage, you can significantly extend the life of your airless paint sprayer.
Pre-Painting Maintenance
Before you even begin a paint job, do a thorough check of your airless paint sprayer to avoid issues down the road. First, examine the intake filter to make sure it is clean. Clogged intake filters can restrict paint flow and cause uneven coverage. Remove the filter and rinse it under water to remove any built-up debris or dried paint. For deeper cleaning, use a mild solvent like acetone. Allow the filter to dry fully before reinstalling.
Next, check that the spray nozzle is clean and free of obstructions. Soak the nozzle in solvent if needed to dissolve any paint buildup. Use a toothpick to gently dislodge any material clogging the nozzle opening. A clear, unobstructed nozzle is key for proper paint atomization.
Finally, lubricate the piston and inspect the seals prior to use. This prevents excessive friction and wear during operation.
Proper Paint Thinning and Straining
One of the biggest mistakes people make with airless sprayers is failing to properly thin and strain the paint. Most paints will require thinning with water, mineral spirits or a compatible solvent before spraying for an even, professional finish. Consult the paint instruction for the proper thinning ratios.
After thinning, pour the paint through a paint strainer or filter into the paint container. This catches any dried lumps of paint, skins or debris that could clog the sprayer. Straining ensures a smooth, consistent paint flow. Always stir the paint vigorously each time before pouring more into the container.
Adjusting Pressure and Flow Rate
Airless paint sprayers operate at extremely high pressures of up to 3,000 PSI. While attractive to max out the pressure for increased productivity, this can actually reduce the sprayer's lifespan. Use the lowest pressure setting necessary to get a good spray pattern. Start around 1,500 PSI and adjust as needed. High pressure puts strain on the internal components. It can also cause paint to splatter rather than spraying evenly.
Similarly, adjust the paint flow rate using the pressure control knob. Use a lower flow rate for lighter viscosity paints to prevent excessive overspray. Monitor the spray pattern and coverage to dial this in properly for your project. Avoid running the sprayer at full flow longer than necessary.
Proper Cleaning and Maintenance
Thorough cleaning both during and after painting is imperative to maintain an airless sprayer. Never let paint dry inside the hoses, tip or filters. The constant high pressure can cause dried paint debris to continually chip away at the interior components, causing premature wear and clogging.
Periodically during long paint jobs, flush solvent through the system to remove buildup. When finished spraying for the day, do a full flush by filling the paint container with solvent only. Spray this through the system until it comes out clear. Then inject solvent directly into the intake to backflush any remaining paint out of the hoses.
Follow up with external cleaning of the hoses, nozzle and paint container with solvent and brushes. Never submerge the entire sprayer – simply wipe down the exterior to remove overspray and debris.
Replacing Wear Components
While good maintenance can extend their lifespan, some sprayer components will require periodic replacement as part of regular upkeep. Nozzles, packing, pistons and prime valves undergo a lot of pressure and wear during operation. Replace them as recommended to avoid issues like leaking and loss of spray performance.
Following Basic Usage Best Practices
Your spraying technique can also impact the longevity of your airless sprayer. Avoid these common mistakes:
Starting and stopping the flow at the spray tip. Always start/stop the flow using the trigger gun valve only. Starting/stopping at the tip can cause pressure spikes that damage the pump.
Outrunning the sprayer by moving too fast. Continually stay within the sprayer's capability so it doesn't have to work beyond its limits.
Using worn spray tips. Worn tips require more pressure to atomize the paint, making the pump work harder.
Not straining paint before filling pump basket. Debris can damage internal components. Always strain paint first.
Running the pump dry. Never operate the sprayer without paint as lubricant. Dry operation will damage the packings.
