Airless paint sprayers are a popular choice for many professional painters due to their ability to quickly apply paint and coatings over large surface areas. To get the best results, there are some key points to keep in mind when using an airless sprayer.
Use the Proper Paint Viscosity
Airless sprayers apply paint at very high pressure. Using paint that is too thick can lead to clogs and uneven coverage. Most paint will need to be thinned with recommended thinner before spraying for the best atomization and results. Typically latex wall paint should be thinned with water by about 10% and oil-based paints with paint thinner by 20%.
You want your paint to easily flow through the sprayer hoses and nozzle but still provide adequate coverage. Do a test spray on cardboard to ensure the paint sprays evenly with no tails, sags, or inconsistent patterns.
Use Appropriate Spray Tips and Pressures
Airless spray tips come in a range of sizes measured by "orifice size" - the diameter of the tip's opening - as well as spray patterns like round or flat. For painting walls and broad surfaces, a 517 or 519 tip provides a wide spray pattern to cover area quickly. For trim, cabinets, or detail work, opt for a 311 or 313 fine finish tip.
You also need to set the pump pressure based on your paint viscosity and tip size. Most tips will require pressures between 1500-3000 PSI. Too low of a pressure can cause irregular patterns, while too high can create excessive overspray. Testing on cardboard or plyboard will give you a chance to fine tune the tip and pressure before hitting your project.
Apply an Even Coat Thickness
You want to apply enough paint to provide complete coverage without running or sagging. Applying too little can give inadequate coverage and create lap marks. Over-applying paint leads to drips, sags, and longer dry times. Most surfaces require around 2-3 wet mils of paint for proper coverage. This equates to about 1.5-2.5 dry mils once cured.
Gauge how much paint is going on by checking coverage visually and doing wet mil tests with a gauge. Adjust pressure, spray tip size, or spray speed if the coat looks too thick or thin. Building up multiple light passes allows greater control compared to one heavy coat.
Watch Your Angle and Keep an Even Speed
Moving the sprayer at a consistent speed while keeping it perpendicular to the surface avoids paint build up and thin spots. Rushing through an area starves it of paint, while lingering too long creates runs. Maintain a smooth sweeping motion as you spray side to side at a fixed speed.
Hold the sprayer at a 90 degree angle to your surface. Tilting causes one side of the spray pattern to move closer, concentrating paint unevenly. Be conscious of keeping the sprayer vertically oriented as you move your arm. Consistent speed and angle provides professional uniformity in your paint job.
Watch for Signs of Tip Wear
The spray tip is exposed to very high pressures, paint abrasives, and drying residue. Inspect tips regularly for wear. Signs include spray pattern distortion, spitty or "tailing" spray, increased overspray, reduced flow, and leaks. Rotate the tip 180 degrees or swap in a backup tip as soon as you notice wear. Letting a worn tip continue spraying will damage the sprayer.
Clean Thoroughly After Finishing
Paint drying in your sprayer hoses, tip, and filters can ruin your equipment. Always clean your sprayer thoroughly after finishing your project, flushing solvent through the system helps dissolve paint buildup. Taking time to clean all parts prevents clogs, fouling issues, and maintains your sprayer for next time.
