If you take the time to put each paint sprayer through its paces in a variety of conditions, you'll know with certainty whether it has the quality and capabilities to handle your needs. So what exactly should you look for when testing out airless paint sprayers?
Air Pressure
The heart of any pneumatic sprayer is the air power and pressure it can generate. This will dictate how well the sprayer can atomize different paint viscosities and project the coating over surfaces. Lacking enough pressure leads to sputtering, tailing, and uneven coverage.
When testing, pay close attention to the sprayer's stall pressure - this is the maximum pressure it can achieve before stalling out. Thin coatings like lacquers and stains require relatively low stall pressures around 1500-2000 PSI. Thicker latex wall paints need machines hitting at least 2500-3000 PSI to properly atomize.
For extremely viscous coatings like industrial floor epoxies, block fillers, and textured plaster, you'll want a burly sprayer with a stall pressure of 3300 PSI or higher. Anything less will struggle to push these heavy materials. You'll know the pressure is lacking if you see excessive fingering/tailing or cannot achieve a consistent fan pattern.
The other key pressure factor is the operating pressure range. Better sprayers offer the ability to precisely adjust pressure in 100-200 PSI increments to fine tune for different coatings and tip sizes. This flexibility allows you to dial in the lowest pressure needed for each job for the best transfer efficiency.
Spray Pattern and Coverage
The entire reason for using an airless sprayer is to rapidly apply an even coating over large surface areas. An ideal spray pattern should have a tapered fan shape with the paint distributed uniformly from the central core out to the edges. There shouldn't be any heavy concentrations or dry areas within the fan. The edges themselves should have a soft, diffuse blend rather than a hard line separating covered and uncovered sections.
To evaluate this, I'll spray the unit onto a test surface from various angles and distances within its operating range. I'm looking for a spray pattern that maintains its shape and coverage integrity no matter how I'm positioning the gun.
Tied to this is checking the true coverage area that the sprayer can effectively coat on a single pass. Specifications may claim a 10 or 12-inch spray pattern, but that doesn't mean much if the edges are so dry that you have to overlap passes significantly to cover a section. A quality sprayer should provide a uniform 8-10 inch covered width without excess overlapping.
Transfer Efficiency
When evaluating a unit, you will measure the transfer efficiency, what percentage of the total paint volume dispersed ended up on the target surface versus being lost to the air or surroundings as mist.
Quality airless sprayers should have transfer efficiencies in the 60-80% range for standard latex paints. Anything much below 60% raises red flags over excessive overspray that will waste paint and create a mess and spray dust to clean up.
A moderate amount of airborne fine mist is inevitable with any sprayer, but it shouldn't be thick enough to obscure the spray pattern itself. And of course, keeping extremely close watch for any spills, drips or blobs of paint being flung off the gun assembly.
The AEROPRO 990 Top Commercial Airless Paint Sprayer is designed for high volume, frequent use. This ultra-high pressure sprayer can blast out up to 3.5L per minute while operating up to 3300 PSI, allowing it to spray high viscosity coatings with ease.
Polyurethane cover permits greater flexibility and tighter bends. Dissipates static charge. Light weight-approximately half that of comparable rubber or wire hose. O.D smaller than comparable rubber hose without reducing the I.D., pressure rating, or fluid-carrying capacity.
